DESCRIPTION:GORHAM\, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Athletics Department is excited to host its 36th annual Husky Golf Classic\, on August 4 at Poland Spring Golf Course and Resort. One of Maine’s most historic golf courses\, Poland Spring is an 18-hole\, par 71\, championship layout with a slope of 125\, measuring 6\,178 yards. \nThis year’s classic will be played as a four-player scramble\, beginning at 9am\, with prizes for 1st-3rd gross and net scores. Additional prizes will be awarded for the longest drive (men and women) and closest to the pin (men and women). The event will also feature a 50/50 Raffle\, auction and door prizes\, a putting contest\, raffle prizes\, and a new car for a hole-in-one shot. \nA barbeque lunch will be served at two locations on the course from 11am-1pm\, and a full dinner will be served at the conclusion of the event along with the awarding of prizes. \n

DESCRIPTION:Norm Nolette Chapter Raises Nearly $1 Million Since Golf Tournament’s Inception\n\n\n\n September 27\, 2023 | CU Collaboration and Chapter Activity\, Ending Hunger. Since 1995\, the Norm Nolette Chapter of Credit Unions has hosted an annual golf tournament to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger. This year’s event was held on August 24 at the Poland Spring Golf Course and raised an outstanding $60\,200\, exceeding their previous highest fundraising total by $3\,200!\nThe culmination of the Norm Nolette Chapter’s twenty-eighth tournament also signifies another significant milestone: this event has raised $964\,171.58 since its start—nearly $1 million! All proceeds throughout the years have been directed to the Campaign.“When the chapter began hosting this tournament back in 1995\, I don’t think any of us could have imagined how much it would grow and raise in support of the Campaign for Ending Hunger\,” said Denise Nowinski\, Director of Education and Member Relations at Tricorp FCU. “This truly is an event that the credit unions in three states look forward to each year. It is a great way to connect\, have fun\, and raise money to help combat hunger in Maine.”The credit unions in the chapter lent a helping hand\, from securing sponsorships to working it day-of. Their collaborative efforts made the event a huge success. Tricorp FCU specifically feels a special tie to carrying this tournament out each year\, as Norm Nolette was the very first CEO at Tricorp.For the past 24 years\, the Tricorp FCU has led the chapter in organizing and coordinating the event\, along with a committee of chapter credit union employees. The tournament location holds significance\, as well\, as it was Norm Nolette’s favorite course to play. DESCRIPTION:Denny Breau’s rhythmically flawless and dazzlingly clear style allows him to do amazing and stunning things with a six-string guitar. He first draws in an audience with a finely arranged melody and then slides effortlessly into scorching fingerwork that sets ears aflame. The lighting fast guitar lines that seem almost humanly impossible to accomplish are balanced with those that have a quiet intimacy and wrap tenderly around his carefully crafted songs. He mixes genres with ease — folk\, Delta blues\, country and jazz — “creating a totally accessible musical mélange that captivates as it entertains\,” according to Lucky Clark writing for the Kennebec (Maine) Journal. \nGuitarists in the audience often suspect that they have been left in the dust and regularly tell Denny that they might as well hang up their guitars! As Denny greets concert-goers and shakes hands following his performances\, guitar players invariably ask how he performs certain techniques and Denny\, who has a passion for teaching\, is happy to show them. This is especially true when demonstrating the guitar style of Chet Atkins\, who was a family friend and major influence. Shows usually include a “smartly executed Chet Atkins medley by Breau who truly does the late Atkins proud\,” according to a review in Dirty Linen magazine. \nIt is not an exaggeration to say that Denny was born to the instrument on May 26\, 1952. His parents\, Hal Lone Pine and Betty Cody\, were popular country performers and RCA recording artists beginning in the 1940s. His older brother\, the late Lenny Breau\, is considered a jazz guitar giant. A recent Dirty Linen review of Denny’s solo CD of “neighborly song portraits of weathered souls” said that “listening to Denny nimbly bend his acoustic steel strings…one can hear a jazz player’s elegant fluidity.” \nDenny started playing guitar when he was 9 years old and was performing professionally by his early teens. During more than 30 years as a full-time musician\, he has performed with many well-known artists and picked alongside outstanding guitarists including Bryan Sutton\, Harvey Reid\, J.P. Cormier\, Pat Donohue\, Dan Crary and Steve Kaufman. He has long been in demand as a studio musician and has done jingles and sound tracks for radio and television as well as recorded and produced albums for other artists. Denny was a member of roots music trio Turkey Hollow with Tom Rowe and Tom’s son Dave starting in 1998. Since Tom’s death in early 2004\, Denny and Dave have continued to perform as Turkey Hollow on a limited bases. Denny was inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004\, the youngest inductee in the history of the organization. \nIn addition to an active solo career\, Denny gives private guitar lessons and teaches music clinics. He also fronts the Denny Breau Trio. Both in solo and trio performances\, musical boundaries disappear as Denny takes his music to wherever the joy and spirit of the moment leads him. \nDenny is a triple threat: a consummate picker\, evocative songwriter\, and a singer with a ” voice that is warm and inviting but completely unpretentious— much like the singer himself\,” according to Lucky Clark. Mainers have long considered Denny a “must –see\,” but they are happy to share a favorite son with those “from away.”

DESCRIPTION:Vision and legacy of the Gerber’s\n\n“In 1977\, brothers Saul and Phil Gerber were both members of the Maine Seniors. The Maine Seniors was the only senior golf association in the state and membership was limited to their member courses of Portland\, Augusta\, York and Martindale.  The outside waiting list was ten years.  They decided to do something about it so that their seniors friends from Riverside\, Purpoodock and other courses in southern Maine would be able to play senior tournaments.  They enlisted the help of Purpoodock members Joe Alberti and Buzzer Feeney and starter to sign up seniors from surrounding courses. \nThe first year courses were Riverside\, Purpoodock\, Willowdale\, Biddeford-Saco\, Cape Arundel\, Webhannet\, Gorham and York.  The golf courses were almost empty on Tuesday’s and they welcomed the additional play.  A light lunch was included with golf and forty-five years later the association and good times on the links still exist. \nSaul passed away in 1993 and his son John assisted his uncle Phil in continuing to organize the tournaments.  With the passing of Phil in 1996\, John expanded the membership and added other golf courses in southern Maine and has run the tournaments for the past twenty-eight years. \nI think\, with my father’s vision\, thousands of golfers\, both amateur and professional\, have enjoyed senior golf through the years.” \nJohn Gerber\, 2021

He will bring a great day of golf and fun for all! \nSuzanne Grover\, 73\, of Norway\, passed away on Jan. 10\, 2018. A graduate of Gould Academy\, she and her husband\, Rupert were a founders of Grover Gundrilling\, Inc.\, Suzanne’s generosity toward the needy was astounding. Almost every day you would find her picking up food in her big black SUV at Wal-mart to personally distribute the donated food to the food pantries. \nPoland Spring will donate the course\, carts and food to get us our way to raising lots of money for the two food banks! \nBring food (not water) and every pound of food you give you’ll get a raffle ticket for some great prizes! \n
